When the Godfather and I were undergrads at the university, there was a place near campus that was famous for it’s chopped chicken bowls and pita sandwiches. We ate there a few times, liked the food, and filed away the “healthy chicken rice bowl” idea for after we were married and had a place together. Rice bowls were a good compromise for us at the time. I liked a lot of variety and veggies and salads, and his main food groups were: coffee, rice/bread, meat, and coffee. Since rice bowls have two of the four food groups, I could sneak in veggies and a sauce so everyone was happy. Before I got into cookie decorating, I always wondered how cookie artists achieved consistent results over dozens of cookies. In some cases, it’s pure skill. But not everyone is a natural born artist, right? I can barely draw a straight line without a ruler! Then I discovered the existence of the KopyKake and other similar decorating projectors. Absolutely marvelous inventions, but expensive, and requiring more space than justifiable for a hobby artist like myself. So, I looked for alternative cookie decorating methods, especially to create designs like these beautiful baby shower monogrammed cookies that I shipped off to my friend Jennifer before the birth of her baby girl in November. Let’s start the week with a little real talk, shall we? As a full-time blogger, I am a work at home mother. This means that while I have my office at home and can (in theory) work whenever I’d like and still be present for all things domestic, I’m actually constantly juggling the duties and expectations of being a “stay at home mom” with the realities of running an active and growing blog. It’s hectic and all coordinated via a paper planner, but I definitely find myself feeling the rush around dinner time. (more…)

I didn’t know this, but the Godfather and I grew up bagel snobs! Apparently, it’s what happens when one is raised in an area like South Florida with plenty of ex-New Yorkers who demand decent bagels. When I talk about “decent bagels”, I’m referring to bagels with flavor, a chewy crust, and a soft yet still chewy center, not that round bread with a hole nonsense sold at most chain bakeries. You can imagine the culture shock when we left our South Florida bubble and moved to Georgia. The Godfather mentioned the lack of bagel options to a co-worker and she recommended a freezer brand. A savory Cuban shrimp dish, creole shrimp (or camaron criollo) is a tasty and relatively quick meal to make at home.
This is another Cuban dish I learned to make by watching my in laws. It actually came to the blog accidentally. My in-laws were visiting, and my father spied some shrimp at the market that he thought looked absolutely fabulous. 30 seconds later, plans to go out that evening changed so we could make creole shrimp at home! My in-laws looked at me and said, “you need to take pictures and put this on the blog”. On a side note, I love how this blog has become a family affair and a way to document “home” recipes. It makes my heart happy to blend food from the Godfather’s family, my family, and new foods we discover together for the site. Good food is meant to be shared, darlings. (more…)
