Chinese five spice is a blend of 5 spices: cinnamon, fennel, cloves, star anise, and Szechuan peppercorns (also called pink peppercorns). It’s common in many Asian dishes, and you can find premade blends in the dried spice section of most grocery stores. I have a confession to make. It’s not Christmas for me unless I have a taste of eggnog and gingerbread. Usually this comes separately, but a few years ago, I decided to combine the two and enjoy them together! Coconut macaroons take me back to childhood! My mother loves coconut, so she bought these frequently, and we could find them everywhere year-round, but especially in the spring around Passover and Easter. Coconut macaroons are often eaten during Passover because they contain no leaveners, and I feel like there’s coconut everything around Easter anyway. But because my mother loved them, coconut macaroons also mean Christmas for me because every year we would make slice and bake cookies from refrigerated dough, maybe decorate them with tube icing, and buy coconut macaroons for my mom. My baby sister lives about 3 hours away, which seems like practically next door after eight years of living no less than 9 hours away from family. Periodically, the Godfather, A, and I drive out to meet her and her husband in Charlottesville to hang out, have lunch, and catch up. A few weekends ago, we drove out to meet them and share in the fun fall ritual of apple picking! And then I saw something which inspired me to come home and get to work on this apple recipe. (more…)

Two orange treats in one week? Yes. Because it’s flu season or something and everyone is sick, but we aren’t in our house and I’m going to say it’s because of desserts with fresh orange zest in them.
