Classic flan gets a citrus liquor twist in this Grand Marnier flan recipe. Flan is a delicious, cooling, custard dessert common in Latin cuisine.
Here’s a fun fact I learned recently – flan has Roman roots! Apparently, a savory version was introduced to Europe by the Romans, and the rest is history. Who knew? Anyway, I thought this was a fun little bit of food etymology perfect for sharing to start the post so we can all say we learned something new. Nowadays when most people think of flan, it’s in conjunction with Latin American cuisine, and it’s almost always sweet.
Whatever the origin, flan is one of my favorite desserts. I like the cool yet firm texture of the custard, and it’s such a fabulous make-ahead dish. This Grand Marnier flan was actually my birthday “cake” this year, and I couldn’t let 2016 leave us without sharing the recipe. (more…)
A splash of bourbon adds a perfect kick to this easy homemade bourbon butterscotch pudding!
It feels like I’ve spoken more about simplicity recently. Sometimes to share how to make the seemingly complicated accessible, but mostly because it’s a theme on my mind as the year’s end approaches. Or maybe it’s just my current love of remaking childhood/retro recipes. It’s not gelatin-mold salad-level love just yet, but definitely pudding-level. I didn’t see gelatin mold salad outside the grocery deli case until adulthood though… South Florida isn’t “that” Southern. 😉 (more…)
A rich caramel swirl rippled perfectly through pillowy coffee flavored marshmallows. These caramel latte marshmallows are coffee-lover gourmet marshmallow perfection, and perfect to make at home.
We have 4 (maybe 5?) different kinds of coffee maker in our house – not one a “traditional” coffee pot or pod coffee maker. Stove top espresso, French press, pour over, travel press mugs, all live in our small “coffee and tea” cupboard nestled between the microwave and refrigerator. A grinder and a few other accessories in there too. We do not play when it comes to coffee in this house. (more…)
The weather outside is frightful, but hot chocolate macarons are sure to warm your heart – delightful fireplace burning or not.
Hot chocolate and soup are my two favorite cold weather comfort treats. When I see temperatures dropping, I make sure I have ingredients on hand for both hot chocolate from scratch and from a mix, and wait for the perfect chilly evenings to snuggle up on the couch sipping cocoa from a mug. Marshmallows optional. As we discovered last year though, I can get a little over-zealous in the purchase of hot chocolate mix, meaning it finds its way into baked goods. My caramel hot chocolate brownies were such a hit last year, I decided to experiment a bit this year and make hot chocolate macarons! (more…)
Pomegranates are a gorgeous winter fruit to enjoy in all sorts of recipes! One of my favorite easy breakfasts or snacks is this pomegranate vanilla chia seed pudding parfait.
I’ve always loved pomegranates. As a kid, I thought it was so much fun to open the fruit and pick out the seeds one by one. I use more efficient peeling methods now, but a bowl of colorful pomegranate seeds still makes me happy. Enjoying fruits and vegetables in their natural state (thanks mom!), I usually just enjoy fresh as a snack with some nuts. Pomegranate seeds are also great over oatmeal or yogurt. And that’s what inspired this recipe, which I enjoyed enough to share here! (more…)
