Key Lime Margarita

Sharing is caring!

A key lime margarita is an easy, tasty cocktail to enjoy during the summer months!

Quite a few years ago, I went through a brief period in time where I would actually stop flipping channels and watch “Real Housewives of Whatever” while I folded laundry. One of those days, watching a show from one of those cities, I happened to catch one of the housewives ordering a “skinny margarita”, which she explained was simply tequila, triple sec, and lime. She saved calories by skipping the mixers common in restaurant margaritas, and was still able to enjoy drinks with the girls. I was curious, so I asked the Godfather to make me one that evening, and since that day, we haven’t made margaritas with mixers.

We shared this “new to us at the time” style of margarita making with my in-laws and they said that’s how margaritas are made in all the non-touristy areas of Mexico they’ve traveled to. Which makes sense to me since this is a perfect sipping margarita. If you’re looking to enjoy a single drink, make it something you can sip and savor without going overboard. Of course, we’re hardly the party crowd here, most of the time when the Godfather and I make margaritas, we will make one and share… #yolo?

Today’s recipe is for a key lime margarita, a Floridian twist we make when we have extra key limes on hand. It’s similar to a classic margarita but has more of the sweet tang from the key lime. We’ve used other citrus fruits and even fresh herbs from time to time (cilantro is a good one), but since this is the first margarita I share on the blog, we’re keeping it classic.

I will also walk you through making a margarita thanks to the aid of my handsome resident bartender. 😉 We’ll skip the steps where you take the glass out of the cupboard and add ice, cut the lime wedge, and pull out your liquor. We start with adding your tequila…

Then add some triple sec or Grand Marnier…

Hmm... I need a Godfather to make me margaritas. Also, I love the idea of adding cilantro. Herby cocktails are my fave!

Herby cocktails are where it's at! There was a place I used to go with work friends for happy hour sometimes that made a delicious basil gimlet. Yum!

I can't stand tall cocktails, they are all too sweet and nasty, this on the other hand sounds perfect, a little like a rusty nail but with tequila rather than scotch Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Although only one drink?????

I love love love key limes. I never thought to use those instead of regular limes in a margarita. Genius!

There's just enough of a difference in flavor that it makes a difference. Key limes are just a bit sweeter :)
