When it comes to sparkling wine cocktails, it’s easy to stick to the basics, like mimosas. But why would we do that when there are so many other options? Prosecco cocktails are easy to mix up and customize to suit a variety of events. I think this prosecco margarita cocktail is a great option for a fiesta-themed brunch or happy hour!

The nice thing about this recipe is that it’s simple to scale. You can mix up 2 cocktails, or use a bottle of prosecco to mix a pitcher for a crowd. Either way, it’s easy to enjoy responsibly!

Prosecco Margarita Cocktail Ingredients

The ingredient list here is a bit different from other margarita recipes on my site, like these brunch margaritas. Those use a sweet and sour mix to add volume and flavor.

Since we don’t want to muddle the flavor of the prosecco too much, this recipe doesn’t call for a mixer. Instead, we use the ingredients from a classic margarita – tequila, lime, triple sec – and the prosecco is used in place of the mixer.

Because we don’t use a mixer though, this prosecco cocktail recipe packs a punch! Sip slowly.

This is before adding the prosecco… they’re potent!

The two liquors you’ll need are tequila and a triple sec. You can use a silver or anejo tequila. The anejo tequila will give you a bit of deeper flavor since reposado tequilas are aged in barrels while silver tequilas are not.

Triple sec is a type of orange liquer and you have quite a few options on the market. For a budget-friendly option, there are a couple different brands of triple sec made for mixing. If you’d like to keep the special occasion vibe going and spring for better quality, look for something like Cointreau which has a smoother flavor with more complexities.

It’s not a margarita without lime, so don’t forget the fresh lime juice! You can find bottled lime juice, but I haven’t found a brand that’s a ringer for fresh. Use fresh if you can.

Finally, you may want to add a little simple syrup. We found that just a little really helped round out the flavor of the cocktails. Prosecco, unlike sweet and sour mix, isn’t particularly sweet. Tequila, triple sec, and lime aren’t exactly sweet either.

Okay, technically triple sec is sweet, but you’d have to add a lot of it. That changes the flavor profile, and if you’re using the higher-end stuff, gets pricey. A little simple syrup, on the other hand, fixes everything!

Scaling the Recipe

As written, this cocktail recipe will provide 1 standard cocktail. A standard cocktail is one that has 1.5 ounces of liquor. You can see this one comes in a little stronger than that, though, so I’m marking it as 2 servings.

Here’s why… In the photos, I used small juice glasses, because I liked the texture, and between ice and the size of the glasses, we got 2 drinks. If you plan to serve these margaritas in champagne glasses, you’ll need at least 2 flutes. 2 flutes assuming you use no ice and keep your ingredients very cold before mixing.

To make a pitcher cocktail for a party, you’ll use the entire 750 mL bottle of prosecco. A 750 mL bottle of prosecco contains 5 servings. We don’t use a full serving to top these cocktails, so you’ll get about 6-8 flutes of margaritas.

The other ingredients will scale up as follows:

  • 8 ounces tequila
  • 4 ounces triple sec liquor
  • 1/3 cup lime juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons simple syrup (adjust to taste)

So whether you’re celebrating in a small style or with a grand affair, I hope you enjoy this prosecco margarita cocktail recipe, darlings!
