Before I got into cookie decorating, I always wondered how cookie artists achieved consistent results over dozens of cookies. In some cases, it’s pure skill. But not everyone is a natural born artist, right? I can barely draw a straight line without a ruler! Then I discovered the existence of the KopyKake and other similar decorating projectors. Absolutely marvelous inventions, but expensive, and requiring more space than justifiable for a hobby artist like myself. So, I looked for alternative cookie decorating methods, especially to create designs like these beautiful baby shower monogrammed cookies that I shipped off to my friend Jennifer before the birth of her baby girl in November.
The technique is actually easier to explain in video, so I made one for you. 🙂 The only thing I don’t cover is the setup of the design board. I filmed this, and then when I was editing the video, realized I had a fantastic smear of fuchsia lipstick on my teeth that somehow I missed during filming. How, I have no idea. I just couldn’t leave that in the video! Setup is easy though. Just scale your design on your computer to the correct size, print, and tape to a flat surface. Cover with a piece of wax paper, tape the wax paper to your surface, and you’re all set! The rest is explained in the video…
If you need a good sugar cookie recipe, this is my recipe for cut out sugar cookies. Feel free to use your favorite royal icing recipe. The important thing is to pick the right consistency for your design as I talked about in the video.
Royal icing transfers can be stored indefinitely, although I’ve never held on to any past 3 months. I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial on how to make monogrammed sugar cookies without a projector! <3
