It’s no secret that a summer essential for our family is lots of time on the grill! The Godfather loves to fire up the coals every time he gets a chance. With the herbs in our garden starting to flourish, we’ve been incorporating a lot of fresh herbs into our cooking. Today’s garden star? The sweet basil, which made a perfect green to top today’s Italian Grilled Chicken Burgers!

We were walking around Publix, just doing our usual grocery shopping, and spotted Sargento® Blends™ 5 Cheese Italian Slices and Sargento® Blends™ 4 Cheese Southwest Slices in the refrigerated section. Since we’d just been talking about how we were due to grill some burgers, and how to use the basil in the garden, the cheese was a sign. Our family loves Italian flavors (who doesn’t?) so of course we couldn’t resist the meal inspiration coming from the display and picked up the Italian cheese.

I suggested chicken burgers, and the Godfather agreed immediately. We love our beef burgers, but it’s fun to change things up now and then! We purchased the cheese and the rest of our ingredients, and we were ready for our family BBQ!

Darlings… these Italian grilled chicken burgers were perfection. The ground chicken patty grilled up perfectly, with a nice crust and juicy interior. The Godfather definitely knows his stuff when it comes to making burger patties and he’ll share a few pointers in a minute – I’m going to talk about the toppings.

What kind of sauce should I use for this grilled chicken burger?

First of all, this burger needed absolutely no sauce. Do you know why? Because the combination of fresh tomatoes, fresh basil, and Sargento Blends 5 Cheese Italian Slices is so crazy flavorful that you don’t need anything else.  Sargento blends the creaminess of Mozzarella with Romano, Parmesan, Fontina, and Asiago cheeses for their 5 Cheese Italian Slices, so you get all your favorite Italian cheeses in one slice. Biting into the burger was like eating a margherita pizza from a pizza joint that knows what they’re doing.

Second, you know this burger is a winner when *everyone* in the family finishes their lunch and then the littles ask for leftovers the next day! My oldest even made sure to point out “with the cheese” when she made her lunch request. She is very particular about her cheese, so when I get a special request like this, you’d better believe our new cheese discovery is earning a regular spot on the grocery list. We use Sargento pretty regularly in our house anyway, but extra kudos for this blend. The family is already talking about our next grilled chicken burger BBQ.

And since he’s the burger expert, a few notes from the Godfather on making the best Italian Grilled Chicken Burger patties ever…

The key to making amazing chicken burgers is making sure the patties hold their shape from preparation through grilling. Ground chicken is leaner than the beef typically used for burgers, so when making patties you will notice a difference in texture.  Compared to my ground beef patties, you will notice I use a whole cup of panko (compared to a quarter cup of panko for my beef burgers) per pound of ground chicken. Also, it helps to let the patties “sit” in the refrigerator for at least an hour prior to grilling. This allows the ingredients to meld and makes handling easier when placing the patties on the grill. Keeping the grill time to about five minutes per side (at a grill temperature of 350-375 degrees Fahrenheit) will keep the burgers juicy while providing a nice crust with grill marks.
